About

About the survey

Online survey of adult Iowa residents conducted by Simple Opinions on behalf of Sentient in April 2026. 1,051 people responded from 306 unique Iowa zip codes. 99.5% of respondents could be matched to an Iowa ZCTA polygon. The remaining 5 respondents live in USPS routes that have no ZCTA equivalent (PO-box-only ZIPs, and so on). To help ensure a good representation of Iowa residents, the sample captured a general population pool with targets for gender, age group, ethnicity, and education. Goals were used for areas described as urban, suburban, small town, and rural.

Concern index

Defined as the average (mean) of the six items in Q4 (drinking water, nitrates, runoff, odor, air, the industry itself). “Very concerned” is coded as 1.00, “not at all” as 0.00. The Concern index quartile filter splits respondents into four roughly equal groups along this scale.

How small cells are handled

When a question is crossed with a demographic, individual cells can shrink quickly. Two thresholds apply:

  • Fewer than 5 respondents – the cell is greyed out and percentages are suppressed. These cells should not be read as estimates.
  • Fewer than 30 – shown, but flagged. The margin of error is wide enough that small differences are likely noise.
